United States Seafoods has worked alongside the North Pacific Fishery
Management Council to develop the Essential Fish Habitat Measures for
the Aleutian Islands. In February 2005, the NPFMC, with strong support
from the U.S. Seafoods team, created one of the largest marine reserves
in the world. As a result of these efforts, over 279,114 square nautical miles
were closed to bottom trawls.
The decision to create this marine reserve was applauded by both the
environmental community and the fishing industry.
