Respect for Employees and the Marine Environment
When you are considering employment on at-sea processor, and deciding which company to work for, it is important
to know what kind of work and living conditions to expect. At United States Seafoods you can count on well-maintained,
safe conditions for all employees..
The vessels: The vessels are designed with the versatility to react to changing market and fishing conditions.
These vessels operate in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and the Gulf of Alaska. The factories excel in both round
and headed and gutted (H&G) production in a variety of species. Atka mackerel, rock sole, flathead sole, yellowfin sole,
Pacific Ocean perch (POP), and Pacific cod are among the species of fish that run through our factories each year.
The work: The majority of positions on the vessels are for processors - an entry level position. Processing work is
tedious and can be physically demanding. Processors work sixteen hours a day, seven days a week, for up to three
months or longer.
Living conditions: Crew members have little time or energy to do more than work, eat, and sleep. On the vessel,
usually the Galley area is where crew members can relax and watch a movie. Vessel operators ensure that crew
members are provided with good food and plenty of it. Sleeping quarters differ from vessel to vessel, sleeping two
to six crew members per room. Crew members must have clothing and boots suitable for factory work and weather
conditions. Ship stores stock clothing and raingear, toiletries, and other supplies. Laundry service is also available.
The pay: Crew members are paid an initial crew share rate as well as a bonus crew share rate due upon completion
of the employment contract.
Contracts: Crew members are asked to sign an employment contract. For crew members who meet the terms of
their contracts, room and board are provided at no charge, as well as transportation to and from the fishing grounds.
Joining the Vessel: Upon completing the hiring process, which includes the passing of a pre-employment drug screen
and a background check, we will arrange for your travel to one of our vessels. Generally, we will provide travel to the
vessels as an advance against earnings. If you satisfactorily complete your contractual obligations as outlined in your
contract, you will be reimbursed for travel expenses.

Safety: The vessels meet the highest Coast Guard safety standards and all crew members are provided survival suits
and given safety training. Crew members should be aware that working at sea, especially in the stormy waters of
the Bering Sea, can be hazardous. All crew members are insured under the companies' maritime insurance act
for on-the-job accidents.
Zero tolerance: Drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden aboard. All applicants are required to pass a pre-employment
drug screen that screens for marijuana, alcohol, amphetamines (speed) and other substances. Anyone caught onboard
with drugs or alcohol is sent home at their own expense.
Team environment: At-sea processing vessels are floating communities. Men and women, who represent a variety of
cultures and countries, all work closely together. Getting along with others is an important skill. For the many people
who return season after season to work on an at-sea processor, the camaraderie (friendly environment) is one of
the reasons they return.
Advancement opportunities: We value our crew members who work hard, are excellent team players, and are interested
in a career in the seafood processing industry. Our company promotes from within whenever possible.
